The B-52s emerged as a “new wave” band in the mid-1970s with quirky songs like “Rock Lobster.” They gradually built an audience through college radio and the independent scene before attaining mainstream success in the late 1980s with songs like “Love Shack” and “Roam.”

Blondie, founded by singer Deborah Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, was a punk and new wave pioneer that crossed over into top-40 radio with a collection of hits that included, “Call Me,” “Heart of Glass” and “Rapture.” Blondie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
Date: 2010-08-20

George Robertson performs rock, rockabilly, boogie blues, folk rock, rock & roll, country rock and classic country mixed with originals straight from the heart. He likes to lay out a sultry, fat, clear sound similar to those of the Sun Studio musicians in Memphis. He can play hours of contrasting originals that capture moods and feelings or just let it out! Many of the cover tunes he performs came straight out of the swamps of the Mississippi River Delta. His music has a smooth rhythm with clear vocals that reflect a strong delta influence connecting somewhere between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Ricky Nelson. As his vocal range continues to increase some listeners suggest influences of Roy Orbison and Paul Stookey. George is just happy to enjoy music and knows that it is a dream to sound as good as any of ‘em. He picks a unique guitar style influenced greatly by Luther Perkins and also by Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry. He has clearly developed his own style with his own riffs that shoot straight from the heart. His hope is to give back the love that he receives and for everyone to experience the energy and and freedom that is a gift to each of us.
Date: 2010-08-06

The company is called Cardinal Productions and aims to bring a series of nationally known acts to Charleston. The company’s founders are Nathaniel Smalley and Damon Cater. Smalley graduated this spring from WV Wesleyan College with a degree in business and Cater is CEO of a WV company called Home base Inc., which relocate children in bad situations to alternative homes absent of malignancies such as discrimination, humiliation, poverty, abuse, neglect indifference and selfishness. Smalley, although new to the music business, has his fair share of experience. Throughout his college career at WV Wesleyan, he handled the event and concert coordination for the college, while also interning for National Public Radio program, Mountain Stage.

Cardinal’s first endeavor is a concert featuring country music and bluegrass superstar Ricky Skaggs. He and his band Kentucky Thunder are bringing their fast and furious blend of bluegrass, traditional and country music to the Clay Center Friday, July 30 at 8pm. The show will also feature special guests Sara and Sean Watkins of progressive bluegrass band Nickel Creek.

Skaggs’ career spans decades. The mandolin player, singer, songwriter, and bandleader has won an astonishing 14 Grammy Awards and 8 Country Music Awards. Sara and Sean Watkins also have appeared regularly on NPR’s Mountain Stage radio program and Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.
