Charleston Stage Company wins first place in State Community Theatre Festival

Charleston Stage Company took the top prize in the West Virginia Community Theatre Festival held in Morgantown on Saturday, November 7. The company’s production of Underneath the Lintel by Glen Berger was awarded first place in the festival that took place in the Falbo Theatre in the Creative Arts Center on the campus of West Virginia University. The community theatre festival is an annual event sponsored by the West Virginia Theatre Conference.

Manna Meal

Manna Meal Soup Kitchen operates out of the St. John Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, WV. To date, they have fed over 1.24 million people, serving breakfast and lunch every day.
Run by a small staff and plenty of volunteers, Manna Meal aims to provide meals to the hungry, no questions asked. The organization is not for profit, and relies soley on the contribution of the community.

The Bible Center Church is a congregation that has strong belief on the Bible. Considered as God’s Word, it is taken seriously and literally. Any decision on moral and lifestyle issues are all based on what is written in the Bible.

East End Family Resource Center

Founded with the mission to “build bridges of opportunity”, the East End Family Resource Center accomplishes this aim through programs that gives the residents of Charleston’s East End a window of opportunity to achieve.

The Storehouse

A huge warehouse on Hansford Street is filled with various items ranging from thousands of sticks of deodorant to several square feet of ceramic floor tiles, bottles of body wash to Formica kitchen countertops. This warehouse isn’t for a supermarket or department store chain, but rather it’s a place where non-for-profit groups can get materials they needed for next to nothing.

Open Stage for Kids on March 27

The Unity of Kanawha Valley is having another round of Open Stage of Kids for childrens ages 5 to 15 years old.
Hosted by Ron Sowell and Sky Kershner, kids are encouraged to share whatever talent they posses. They can play an instrument, sing a song, read a book, recite a poem, tell a joke, perform a magic trick, or just talk to the audience. Kids of all ages are welcomed, and even adults too!

Temple B’nai Israel

Judaism had an early start in Charleston. Congregation B’nai Israel or Temple Israel was founded in 1856 — seven years before the state of West Virginia was even created. However, the discovery of the congregation’s cemetery (WV’s oldest Jewish cemetery) hints that it might even be earlier.

Capital City Striders

One of West Virginia’s admirable organizations, the Capital City Strider focuses on youth development through sports. Student athletes who are members of the team hone their track and field skills during summer break, and particpate in club activities aimed to make positive changes in the community. This non-profit organization operates on donations and grants from sponsors throughout the state.
