New River Gorge Bridge Day

The New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia is one of the highest steel-arch bridge open to vehicular traffic in the world. Crossing the New River at 876 feet, the bridge is the center of activities of “Bridge Day,” one of Fayette County’s biggest festivals.

On October 17, 2009, 80,000 spectators are expected to flock to the New River Gorge Bridge to for the largest extreme sports event in the world. The bridge is the launch point of for six hours of safe and legal buildings, antennas, spans or earth (BASE) jumping. Aside from the BASE jumps, parachutists will also be leaping off the bridge, as well as rapelers.

People who aren’t into extreme sports can also enjoy the many activities on solid ground scheduled for that weekend. From Farmer’s markets to various food vendors, you can be sure you won’t go hungry in the midst of the festivities. There’s also an Oktoberfest and Chili Cook-off in downton Montgomery, featuring various homegrown bands.
